Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every week I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.
Black Orc by Kevin Kanner |
First off, I want to apologize for this being late. Normally the Mini of the Week articles go up on the Friday, or sometimes Saturday of each week, but last week life got in the way. In good news though, that means this week you get two Mini's of the Week! This one, and one at the normal time later in the week. (confetti! celebration! yay!)
Now onto the mini itself. I've always really liked the 'Ardboyz sculpts from Shadespire. They have some really dynamic poses, while still retaining that classic 'Ardboyz or Black Orc feel. This guy and the leader are my favorite by far. No conversion work has been done in it, but quite frankly, it doesn't need it. The paint job is amazing. The non-metallic metal looks great without having to be spot on realistic. The whole thing has an artistic feel to it, with some of the brush strokes visible, but in a very deliberate way. It kind of reminds me of how Adrian Smith does his paintings for Warhammer. I especially like how green has been worked into the armor, both from reflecting the skin, as well as the foliage around him.
All of the painting is immaculate, with great blending, wonderful color choices, and a superb style. I especially like the base as well. It's fairly simple, but suits the model. Both reinforcing the green palette, as well as giving it a fantasy vibe. Sometimes you just need your models to be in a forest setting to get that fantasy feel. The super thin, and presumably delicate plants also work great, feeling more real than most basing.
Be sure to check it out on Putty and Paint to see some more views of it and show the artist some love if you like it.
Until next time,
Tyler M.
