Mini of the Week 9-9-16

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Caradryan on Phoenix by Umbra Draconis on Cool Mini or Not

I'm always a fan of well done flame effects, and there is no denying that this is some fantastically done flames. The fire trailing off of the phoenix really has a sense of heat and brightness. It really looks like it is glowing to me, and as far as I can tell it looks like it's all brush work, no airbrushing. For me using a brush for work like this always gives a more pleasing end result. Airbrush fades just look like airbrush fades. The feathers on it look realistic as well while still retaining a magical red feel to them. A lot of phoenixes for Warhammer that I have seen end up looking a bit cartoony, but I think this hobbyist has nailed the realism.

Caradryan himself is very well painted as well, with some really cool fades on the orange metallics. It really looks like some sort of magical armor imbued with the essence of fire. The use of a cool blue for the other parts of the model really makes it pop against the mostly warm colors dominating the rest of the mini. All in all I think this is a great rendition of the phoenix model from GW and probably the best one I have seen yet.

Be sure to check out more views of the model on Cool Mini or Not, and show the artist some love if you like it.

Until next time,

Tyler M.
