Mini of the Week 9-30-16

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Orruk Brutes by Mattia Papaleo on Putty and Paint

What a perfect combination of Old World orc models and Ironjawz orruk models. The Forge World command group, which is what the Old World orcs are, have always been some of my favorite models, they just have so much character. They do stand out a bit from the Ironjawz in style of armor and the fact that they look a little more grizzled, but for the most part they fit right in. Painting them all in the same manner definitely helps tie them together. I do think a little bit of kit bashing would have helped to make it even more seamless, but it's not a huge loss.

Speaking about the paint job, I like how they kept the yellow look of the Ironjawz, but made it the spot color instead of the main color. Really, it looks like they reversed the official scheme and made black the predominant color, with just a few panels picks out in yellow. The amount of weathering and grime on them is the perfect amount too, with all of the areas painted very smoothly and crisply. The skin in particular stands out for how crisp it is. I'm definitely becoming a fan of the lighter green skin color for the orruks, it just gives them so much more vibrancy. It also helps the skin stand out from the dirty yellows and blacks of the armor. This is really just a fantastic job and I would definitely be interested in seeing a whole force that tries to combine these two different aesthetics like this.

Be sure to check out more views of the model on Putty and Paint, and show the artist some love if you like it.

Until next time,

Tyler M.
