Mini of the Week 7-26-19

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Vanguard Pallador vs Brute by Roger Axelsson

Wow, what a duel! There's so much to like about this piece, so let's start with the composition and conversions. I think the Pallador is just straight from the box, but the Brute is definitely subtly converted. The positioning on him definitely feels correct to me. He looks like he's about to get run over by a Gryph-charger. The colors on this are amazing. Everything is super saturated and there are some really bold choices. The bright purple armor and pale green skin are great, while the Pallador has bright pinks, yellow, oranges, and golds standing out against the grey body and silver armor. It all really pops and everything is super smooth and crisp. There's a really good amount of contrast as well with the shadows on the orruks skin really standing out for how dark they are while still being saturated and vibrant.

I think the thing that really ties it together though is the base. It's perfect! I love the mix of moss and grass on top of the rocks. The green is so vibrant and bright and isn't something you see very often in Warhammer figures. Normally it's more war torn and desaturated, but this is just in your face. The rocks have a nice subtle blue tint to them that makes them more interesting. I really like how all of the rocks are facing in the same direction as the Pallador is moving. That coupled with the diamond shape of the base really helps give the whole thing a sense of speed, direction, and movement. The final detail that you might almost miss is the underside of the base. Those aren't just a bunch of rocks sticking out from the ground, they're skulls! It's the perfect Warhammer touch, but by painting them a dark blue/teal they become more abstract. It helps frame the base in a fun and cool way, which itself is doing an excellent job of framing the models and the scene. Everything about this duel is top notch.

Be sure to check it out over on the Official Golden Demon website.

Until next time,
