Mini of the Week 3-9-17

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Khorne Lord on Juggernaught by Lan Studio on CMoN
This is a classically good paint job. It's bright, it's crisp, and it's perfectly smooth. It really embodies the 'Eavy Metal style. You can't go wrong with the red and bronze of the World Eaters, and here they are both saturated and bold. The NMM (non-metallic metals) are wonderful, and at first look you could even be fooled into thinking they are true metallics. I really like how much the contrast between the shadows and highlights on the red has been pushed, leading to some beautiful blends. What really pushes the red over the top though is the extensive, yet reserved battle damage, and that awesome cooling magma look.

Using such desaturated colors for the face really makes it stand out amongst all of the warmer colors. There is still a hint of warmth in the skin though to tie it in with the rest of the model. The use of a lava base is again, another classic motif for Khorne models. This model owes a lot to the super classic and awesome Magamtrax by Victor Hardy, but I think it's wearing its inspiration on its sleeve and not trying to hide it. The only thing that let me down about this model is that it really just looks like a Fantasy model with Marine shoulder pads and a backpack stuck on it. Everything else about it is straight from the Fantasy kit, including the weapon. I feel at the very least they could have switched out the ax for a power or chain ax.

Be sure to check out more views of the model on Cool Mini or Not and show the artist some love if you like it.

Until next time,

Tyler M.
