Mini of the Week 7-13-17

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Valhallans by Filip Haking
This diorama is a couple of years old, but it's one that I've always liked. The whole thing is almost completely scratch built and sculpted, which is pretty impressive. They look like official GW minis to me, and in my opinion, fit perfectly into the existing Valhallan line. It's also nice to see an underrepresented Guard regiment like the Valhallans get some love. The scene he's set is a perfect little vignette of peace during wartime. I can definitely imagine these Guardsmen in this situation, huddled around the fire for warmth. All of the subtle nuances and details for this scene have been rendered perfectly.

The painting is really nice as well, utilizing a classic color scheme for the Valhallans. Everything is nice and smooth and the Object Source Lighting is spot on. Not only is the glow from the flames painted onto the Guardsmen around it, but the rest of the scene is painted slightly darker to represent it swathed in shadows. It's definitely deserving of the Golden Demon trophy it won.

Be sure to check out more views of the model on Putty and Paint and show the artist some love if you like it.

Until next time,

Tyler M.
