Mini of the Week 7-29-16

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Smaug by Karol Rudyk on CMoN
I think this may be the first Lord of the Rings model featured on here. Well, you know what they say, go big or go home and you can't get any bigger then Smaug. I love how realistic the painting is on this, it looks like real lizard skin to me. The way the white of the underbelly shows up between the scales of the red in some areas just helps reinforce the realism. I imagine Karol was looking at pictures of real lizards while he working on this, and it pays off. Going with such a bright red and such a stark black is pretty bold but it looks great.

The amount of subtle colors worked into this model in different areas is great, but I would expect nothing less from Slayer Sword winner Karol Rudyk. I did a whole interview with him back in 2014 which you can read here. There's not much else I can say about this, Karol is definitely becoming the master of all things dragons with his painting lately.

Be sure to check out more views of the model on Cool Mini or Not, and show the artist some love if you like it.

Until next time,

Tyler M.
