Mini of the Week 10-23-20

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Marneus Calgar by zturg on Putty and Paint

This is such a simple yet extremely effective conversion of Calgar! I say simple, but I'm not sure how much re-sculpting actually went into changing his arms into this pose. I imagine there had to be at least a little bit. By simple I mean more the concept and effectiveness of it. There's nothing flashy added to the model, it's just reposing the arms and head yet it changes the model dramatically. While before it looked like Calgar was posing heroically for his troops, here it looks like he's actually in the middle of a fight. Something that's always been interesting about the Chapter Master of the Ultramarines are his weapons. Having two power fists just looks cool, but also must be an interesting fighting style to witness. Kind of like a boxer. I feel like some of that is conveyed here as I can imagine him swinging away with his fists.

The painting on this is really nice as well, especially with his face. The warmth around his nose looks great and just like I'd imagine someone in the middle of a fight would look. Their face would definitely be flushed. It also contrasts well with the cooler tones used for the stubble on his jaw. I'd say overall this model has more of a painterly style to it. The hand of the artist is more visible. I really like painting styles like this since it's not something we often see on minis. The bright red of the base frames the blue of his armor well too. I think if I ever pick up the Calgar model I'll have to give this conversion a shot as well.

Be sure to check it out on Putty and Paint to see some more views of it and show the artist some love if you like it.

Until next time,

Tyler M.
