Mini of the Week 5-15-20

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Katakros by Max "Amon" Richiero on Putty and Paint

Katakros is already an extremely impressive and cool diorama piece on his own straight out of the box, but here that has been taken to another level. I really like the extra sense of height added to the model by working his display base into an extended display. It looks like it might be a piece of wood, but the organic nature of it, painted to look like stone, really lends itself well to the molded bone aesthetic of the Bonereapers. You can just imagine it being part of something sinister that they crafted. The repositioning of the models on the display works really well too. Katakros is now the tallest model in the diorama, no longer competing with the banner. I especially like the messenger model being at the bottom. The lighting from his candle helps draw your eye down there and utilize all of the vertical space. I think one of the most creative things is using the back piece for Katakros as some kind of bone insect. It's suitably creepy, and again, helps utilize all of the vertical space.

The painting on this is great, with lots of moody lighting and various colors worked in. The overall feeling is something sinister, dark, and green, but pinks and purples have been worked in as well. If you look at Katakros you can see the pinks worked into his shadows which lends it a weird sense of organic wrongness when coupled with the rest of what's going on. The backdrop piece is cool too and helps frame him. It also has lots of sinister organic shapes to it, complimenting the Bonereapers. The only thing that sticks out to me a bit is it feels a little too close to the models. I would probably have set it back a little more to give the models some breathing room, but that's a small nitpick on an otherwise exceptional piece.

Be sure to check it out on Putty and Paint to see some more angles and show the artist some love if you like it.

Until next time,
