Mini of the Week 9-3-21

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every week I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Hail and Kill by Melnikov Ivan "Nakatan" on Putty & Paint

What an amazing use of composition, lighting, and color! First off, the pose on this is spot on. The expression on her face is fantastic and matches the righteous zeal I would expect from one of the Soritas unloading with a heavy bolter. I think it's the way the eyes are painted that really sells it. You can see so much of the whites of her eyes, she just looks unhinged. I really like the simplicity of the muzzle flare too. There's nothing fancy there, it's just a globe with a spear of light coming out of it. Yet, with how it's painted and how well the lighting and shadows are placed on the rest of the model, it's utterly believable and also stunning looking. The painting on this is near perfect to begin with, but they really nailed the lighting. I'm always impressed by models that not only of the lighting painted on them, but that the other areas are painted as if to be in shadow. Like she's standing in a dark room unloading with the gun.

The back banner is a nice conversion as well and really adds some height and complexity to the model. The wingspan also helps fill out the large base. Everything about this model is great. It's dynamic both with its lighting, and with the composition, even though she's just standing still. I think it's the bullet casings as well as the way her head is cocked that adds so much movement to a static piece. Amazingly well done.

Be sure to check it out on Putty and Paint to see some more views of it and show the artist some love if you like it.

Until next time,

Tyler M.
