Mini of the Week 10-26-18

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Genestealer Abberants by John Margiotta

John, or Blood as Medium as you may know him, always has some amazing paint jobs. He tends to do small groups of models like this, which really shows off his style across a spread of models. These Abberants have a very naturalistic look to them, with most of the colors being fairly desaturated. I really like how pale it all is, including the blue, which isn't something you commonly see on Genestealers. One of the areas where I feel like he really shines though is in his texture work, especially on metallics, and his weathering.

The weapons have a real gritty feel to them, with tons of depth and variation across the rust and scratches. Keeping your scratches that small, basically at the scale they should be at for models this size, is fairly hard to do. The same goes for his blood spatter and other weathering. It's easy enough to spatter some blood effects on a model, but keeping them to the size they should be really make it look more realistic. His painting style is very painterly, allowing you to see most of the brush strokes, but in a deliberate and interesting way. It gives the models almost the look of a traditional painting but on a 3D mini. You should definitely look through some of his past work as well.

Be sure to check out more views of the model on Putty and Paint and show the artist some love if you like it.

Until next time,

Tyler M.
