Blood Angel Captain by Darren Latham |
Darren Latham is a master of the 'Eavy Metal style, which is no surprise since he's a former 'Eavy Metal painter who now works as a sculptor for GW (Genestealer Cults and Skitarii are his amongst others). Any time he paints up a model for display it's always a spectacle to behold. I always find it interesting when older models are painted using modern day techniques, or, as in this case, when newer models are painted using older color schemes, with modern day techniques. The Blood Angel captain off of the 2nd edition starter set for 40k is iconic, and here Darren has applied that color scheme to one of the new Primaris Captains, also sculpted by him. Everything on this is spot on, even down to the shade of red.
There is something very striking about the old red, yellow, and black color scheme of the Blood Angels. Beyond evoking the classic John Blanche art, it just looks downright cool. It's definitely got that old school feel (more red!), but the technique is right up there with the greatest paint jobs of today. Everything is smooth and crisp, with some amazing freehand. The texture on the cloth and armor is even differentiated, with the cloth having a soft stippled look to it while the armor is all hard edges and glossy highlights. Everything about this model is amazing, from the nostalgia trip it inspires to the composition and execution. I eagerly await the next model from Darren, which looks to be a Kharadron Overlord character.
Be sure to check out more views of the model on Putty and Paint and show the artist some love if you like it. You can also follow Darren on Twitter to see updates of his work.
