Mini of the Week 6-15-18

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Iron Warrior Librarian by Sergey Gybin

This event exclusive Horus Heresy model has always been rather cool. I have a fondness for miniatures with modeled effects like magic and psychic powers. It just makes them so dynamic. Here, this model has been really pushed to its limits with its paint job, creating a sense of extremes. The choice of doing the bright flames for the manifesting demon is awesome looking, and really draws your eyes in. This is balanced nicely with the bright gold top of the staff, the glow on the base, and the red cape. It all frames in the much darker marine himself, who mostly consists of greys and browns with splashes of color. All of the metals are done in a non-metallic metal technique, and all in a rather convincing way. The paint itself is smooth and crisp, with the armor having a different feel from the cloth, skin, and flames.

I think my favorite part of the mini though is the face. The skin is painted fantastically on its own, especially with the slightly purple lower lip which stands out nicely from the ruddy skin tone. Beyond that though, the glowing effect around his head helps draw your attention to it and also ties in to the demon. I really get a sense of this guy using his psychic powers to conjure it. Everything about this model is rather nice, and through its color choices and use of dark and light I get a strong baroque feel from it.

Be sure to check out more views of the model on Putty and Paint and show the artist some love if you like it.

Until next time,

Tyler M.
