Mini of the Week 8-7-21

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every week I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Tyranid Swarm Lord by Phil "hairster" Pryce on Putty and Paint

If you read my Mini of the Week articles on here in the past then you know that I'm a fan of limited palettes. This Swarm Lord checks all of the boxes. I'm already a fan of purple as well, so here we have a model painted almost entirely in various shades of purple and pink. This also harkens back to the classic Genestealer color scheme, which is, in my opinion, the most alien looking of the Tyranid color schemes. Seeing it on one of the larger monsters is great looking. I really like how they've managed to make the different areas and textures of the model look distinct enough as well, even with the limitations.

The painting is very smooth and crisp, and there's some great freehand on the back carapace as well. This mimics patterns seen in nature on insects and fits the bug like nature of them perfectly. The basing is simple enough to not distract from the model, but adds even more verticality to it. It's also very realistic looking, further grounding the Tyranid in a sense of place.

Be sure to check it out on Putty and Paint to see some more views of it and show the artist some love if you like it.

Until next time,

Tyler M.
