Mini of the Week 1-24-20

Welcome back to Mini of the Week, where every Friday I will find a miniature from around the web that exemplifies an aspect of our hobby and share it with you.

Extraction Point by Matteo Di Diomede on Putty and Paint
This piece is actually very reminiscent of an older diorama using the Space Marine Scout Land Speeder and is equally as awesome. You definitely get the feeling of these Marines making a fighting retreat as their Repulsor swings in for an evac. The composition on the piece is very well done, with your eye naturally starting at the bottom left and moving up and to the right. The posing on the Marines is great, especially the one being dragged backwards as he fires. I also really like how the Tyranids are more posed as a group. The Marines read as individuals while the Tyranids just read as a small part of a much larger swarm, exactly as they should.

The Space Marines really pop out at you with their bright yellow armor. Having their Repulsor be black was a great idea and really helps frame them since it sits behind them visually. The Tyranids are also a shade of black, just slightly lighter. Everything has a nice, natural, subdued feel to it. I think the amount of weathering from the red earth really helps ground the whole scene. It really feels like they've been fighting over this area and not that they've just shown up to pose heroically for a snapshot. Overall, it's a great diorama that is composed wonderfully.

Be sure to check out more views of it on Putty and Paint.

Until next time,
